NZ Modern School of Music was founded by Allan Gardiner in 1952 in Blenheim. He took his knowledge of music and created a curriculum that has been proven to work. This contemporary style of teaching piano is where NZ "Modern" School of Music got its name. 

 

Since then, NZMSM has grown its curriculum to also include guitar, bass guitar, keyboard, drums, recorder, and ukulele and the school in Christchurch offers teachers who specialize in other areas including voice, brass, and woodwind. 

 

The piano curriculum includes modern as well as classical styles to build the foundation for learning whatever style the student would like to pursue. Other instruments' curriculum is also cyclical, meaning it builds on each prior part of the curriculum. Students can always look back and see how each new skill helps them get to the next step in their learning.
